ACCC launches product recalls iPhone app

People who want to find out if they have purchased an unsafe product can now use an iPhone application called Recalls Australia developed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
The app uses information from the ACCC’s Recalls Australia website and lists details for each recall, allowing consumers to identify the product. Consumers can find out where a product was sold and what to do if they have purchased a recalled item.
ACCC deputy chairman, Peter Kell, said in a statement that consumers could now get the most up-to-date product recalls on their iPhone while they were at the supermarket or retail store.
“Additionally, the app allows you to report products you think are unsafe directly to the ACCC,” he said.
“You can attach a photo you’ve taken from your phone of the product.”
The Recalls Australia app is available for free on the iTunes store.
It follows a recent bid by the ACCC to improve product safety in Australia. Amendments to the Trade Practices Act in April 2011 meant the industry body gained new powers to fine corporations up to $6600 and individuals up to $1320 for misleading conduct or breaches in product safety provisions.
