Which ISP for my SMB? BigPond vs iiNet

As a small business, it can be difficult to choose which internet service provider will supply you with the quickest and most cost effective data packages

As a small business, it can be difficult to choose which internet service provider will supply you with the quickest and most cost effective data packages. Computerworld Australia compares the 200GB iiNet and BigPond broadband plans.

The Telstra Complete Home Bundle: Fixed Broadband and Home Phone is $88.00 a month, with a minimum cost of $2136.00, while iiNet offers a $69.95 a month broadband plan, or a bundle including an iiNet phone for $99.90 a month with a minimum cost of $2437.55.

Both Telstra and iiNet deals offer a download speed of ADSL2+, with no excess use charges. However, once the 200GB of data have been used, the speed on both plans is slowed down to 256kbps until the next billing cycle starts. iiNet allows 200GB a month in peak data and offpeak data allowances while Telstra only offers 200GB a month flat. Offpeak times for iiNet are from 1am to 9am.

Telstra’s deal gives you one email account and 20MB work of web space, with a dynamic IP address and a delivery fee of $9.95 and several installation options. There are self installation kits that range from $24.00 to $48.00 and two professional installations at a cost of $249.00 and $338.00. iiNet offers ten email accounts with 1 GB of web space and a dynamic IP address. The new connection fee is $79.95 with a transfer connection fee of $39.00 if you move over from another provider. The set up options include several different router options (from $169.00 to $269.00) or an ADSL modem USB/Ethernet connection that costs $69.00.

Overall, if your business is only in need of a broadband connection, the iiNet plan is the best deal. Whilst it is cheaper, you also receive additional email accounts and a superior amount of web space. However, for a phone and internet bundle, BigPond’s offering is far more financially viable.
