Greens call for Wi-Fi in public transport

The Greens have called for free Wi-Fi to be provided on Adelaide's buses, trains and trams to encourage use of public transport

The Greens say free Wi-Fi internet connections should be available on buses, trains and trams in Adelaide to encourage more people to use public transport.

Greens MP Mark Parnell said public transport patronage had fallen in 2010/11, the first fall in five years.

The figures showed 65.95 million public transport trips were taken last year compared to 68.38 million the previous year.

"With population rising we should be seeing big increases in public transport commuters, not a drop-off," Parnell said.

"One way to attract patrons back to public transport is to use new technology to improve the experience for passengers.

"Free Wi-Fi on trains, trams, buses and at stations allows passengers to use their daily commute to stay connected.

"You can't browse the web or check emails or Facebook while stuck in traffic, but you can do these things on public transport."

Parnell said free Wi-Fi had been hugely popular when trialled in other states.
