The full results won't be in for some time, but the national census has already shown that Australians have embraced the online way of doing things.
Early figures show more than two million households had opted to fill out the 2011 census online by midnight, and the system managed to stand up to the test.
At its peak on Tuesday night more than 100 eCensus forms were being submitted every second, census program national media manager, David McHugh, said.
"As far as the eCensus goes it stood up well," he said.
"It didn't crash. There were no glitches at all."
In 2006, the first time Australians could complete the questionnaire online, nine per cent of households took up that option.
This year about 30 per cent of respondents were expected to have filled out their census online.
"It's definitely tracking towards that figure at the moment," McHugh said.
He said people had until September 5 to submit their eCensus forms.
McHugh advised shiftworkers who were just getting home on Wednesday morning to still fill out their eCensus or census form as though it was Tuesday, August 9.
Millions of Australians were asked more than 60 questions about their profession, religion, income and the make-up of their family in a bid to get an accurate snapshot of the country and our characteristics.
Census 2011 will cost an estimated $440 million, or about $19 per person.
