Amcom inks $9m deal with Uni of WA for Cloud services

Amcom Telecommunications (ASX:AMM) has penned a three-year $9 million contract to provide hosted Cloud services to the University of Western Australia (UWA).

Under the terms of the deal, Amcom will host UWA’s Cloud services out of its Perth-based data centres and will provide “hundreds” of servers with over 400 Terabytes (TB) of storage delivered over Amcom’s ten Gigabit fibre network.

In a statement to the ASX, UWA director of information management, Mary Davies, said the Cloud services would underpin how the university would provide students, academics and researchers with the computing power and storage needed in coming years.

“Amcom has been able to provide us with a cost effective, secure, reliable and dedicated product that gives us capacity and capability across all faculties,” she said. “It is both simple for us to manage and user friendly for our staff.”

“Amcom is ready to deliver the hosted services we require now, and most important our data is stored in Perth using dedicated infrastructure (single tenant) under a private hosted services agreement.”

Amcom joins a host of telcos offering Cloud services with Telstra, Optus and Macquarie Telecom making investments in the Cloud space.

However, as telcos increasingly jump on the Cloud bandwagon their platforms have raised questions around what exactly they can offer in comparison with more traditional IT services providers.
