The Tasmanian government media department has been hacked, with a cryptic email bearing Lara Giddings' name being sent to journalists.

A suspect email from the department was sent to the media on Thursday morning, bearing the image of a black and green figure, and the words "S4t4n1c S0uls".

The email also had prominently the phrase "Lara Giddings MP, Acting Acting Premier".

A Tasmanian government spokesman said the email was being investigated.
