Australian business communications provider Orange Business Services (OBS) has appointed Gordon Makryllos as its new managing director for Australia/New Zealand.

Commenting on the appointment, OBS senior-vice president Asia Pacific, Yee May Leong, said Makryllos’ knowledge of local markets would play an essential role company’s future operations.

“Gordon will lead the local team to continue the company’s growth and deliver its network related services to Australasia’s multinational customers,” he said in a statement.

Makryllos brings to the role experience in transformational leadership from previous roles at HP, IBM, Telstra, and IT and data centre provider APC.

Australian National University

The ANU has appointed John Hosking as the new Dean of the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science. Commenting on the appointment, ANU vice-chancellor Ian Young said Hosking comes from a long career at University of Auckland, where he was most recently director of the Centre for Software Innovation and professor of Applied Computer Science. “Professor Hosking has an outstanding academic record in the fields of software engineering and computer science, having authored over 200 refereed publications in these fields,” Young said in a statement. “His research has attracted strong funding support from both government competitive grants and industry.”

“Professor Hosking is also an accomplished educator, having received a New Zealand National Tertiary Teaching Excellence award, and a University of Auckland Teaching Award for Research Supervision. According to Young, Hosking’s background in academic administration, research and teaching excellence had given him the attributes to build on the position of the college and to take it to the next phase of its development. “I look forward to contributing to the next steps in the College’s development and to working with an excellent team of people at ANU,” Hosking said.

Sybase

Enterprise and mobile software company Sybase has appointed John Sims as the new president of its mobile services business, Sybase 365, effective 1 July.

Sims succeeds Marty Beard who has resigned to “pursue other endeavours” and will focus on extending the global operations of Sybase 365 in messaging and mobile commerce services.

Sims previously spent nine years as chief executive of mobile broadband company, 724 Solutions, from 2001 to 2010. He was also co-founder, CEO and president of TANTAU Software, a global provider of high volume, secure, mobile eCommerce solutions to enterprises, prior to which he was chief operating officer at telecommunications support company, SCC Communications.

“Sybase 365 has a unique opportunity to expand its share of the operator services and mobile commerce services markets, particularly in the rapidly growing areas of mobile banking, mobile payments and IPX connectivity,” Sims said in a statement. “It will be exciting and gratifying to shepherd Sybase 365 growth in such a vibrant market.”
