New directions for ACCC on NBN deal

Draft expected within the next few days

Broadband minister, Stephen Conroy, is to give new directions to the competition watchdog to improve the chance of an agreement between the government and Telstra on the National Broadband Network (NBN).

"I suspect the draft will be available in the next few days," Senator Conroy told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

There would be a two week commentary period before the directions were formally sent to the Australian Consumer Competition Commission (ACCC), he said.

Telstra's copper wires are to be replaced with high-speed optical fibres over the next nine years as the NBN is rolled out, but final agreement has not been reached on the terms for the use of Telstra's assets.

The ACCC is to rule whether Telstra's undertaking on structural separation gives its rivals equivalent access to its copper network as the NBN is constructed.
