Virtual infrastructure management firm Veeam Software has added Backup & Replication support for Microsoft Hyper-V, in an important move in the virtualisation market.
Veeam, a longstanding VMware partner, told Techworld it was adding Microsoft Hyper-V support as a major part of its growth in what it calls the "small business" market, up to 500 users, but also including businesses with very low numbers of staff.
Speaking today at the Microsoft TechEd conference in the US, the company announced it is adding support for Windows Server Hyper-V and Microsoft Hyper-V Server to its Veeam Backup & Replication product, which it claims is running with over 1.5 million virtual machines worldwide.
Veeam said its backup and replication support for Hyper-V includes near-continuous data protection and fast recovery times. It also includes technology for changed block tracking for quicker and more frequent processes, and built-in deduplication.
Ratmir Timashev, chief executive at Veeam, told Techworld: "It's a big move for us to add Hyper-V, and it's important. Our customers and partners are increasingly asking about Hyper-V support."
"With 2-in-1 backup and replication, changed block tracking and built-in deduplication, Veeam will provide Hyper-V administrators with a complete solution for virtualisation-based data protection and disaster recovery that is easy-to-use and cost-effective."
Ashish Nadkarni, senior analyst at Taneja Group, said IT managers needed "to select virtualisation management solutions, including backup and replication solutions, that can work with both VMware and Hyper-V", because "multi-hypervisor environments are quickly becoming the norm, not the exception".
