Salesforce.com set to build Australian data centre

Cloud services provider, Salesforce.com, has confirmed reports that it is planning to build an Australian data centre.

In a recent interview with The Australian, Salesforce.com chief executive, Marc Benioff, said that building a data centre to support the company’s online enterprise software offerings was a given, and that the company was currently evaluating when it would start building an Australian facility.

Benioff has been outspoken about expanding his company’s Cloud services. In May 2010, he said Microsoft’s Office productivity suite was a “false Cloud’ and called the vendor a 'patent troll' after the vendor sued Salesforce.com, alleging that the provider infringed nine of its patents.

A/NZ vice president sales, Tony Armfield, confirmed in a statement to Computerworld Australia that it was “only a matter of time” before building commenced. However, he would not provide a construction date, how large the facility would be or where it would be located.

“Frankly, the lack of a local data centre hasn't been a barrier,” he said. “For the last seven years, we have delivered success to local customers like Australian Air Express, Flight Centre Management, and FTSE from our global data centre network.”

Salesforce.com A/NZ provides services to local customers from its data centres in Singapore and the US.

The company is the latest in a long line of vendors clamouring to build local data centres. Hewlett Packard, Dell and Kaspersky have all outlined plans to build or expand data centres with HP and Dell also gaining selection as part of the Federal Government’s data centre migration panel.

The panel was formed to help agencies move from existing data centre facilities into new centres.
