Telcoinabox eyes up A/NZ banking sector

A/NZ telecommunications wholesaler Telcoinabox has signalled its intentions to offer its mobile,broadband and telecommunications services to the banking services sector with New Zealand Credit Union's (NZCU) South Island branch the first to sign on.

At this stage, all 25,000 South Island based members would gain access to broadband and mobile phone call rates starting from NZ$0.15 cents a minute in April.

A Telcoinabox spokeswoman said that it had plans to sign up more banks in either Australia or New Zealand this year but could not confirm if it was in talks with other institutions.

She said the credit union members wanted lower rates on mobile phone calls and approached Telcoinabox.

Credit union member to member mobile call rates would start from NZ$0.15 cents a minute and NZ$0.35 cents a minute to non-members.

NZCU South chief executive, Andrew Leys,said in a statement that as a cooperative it wanted to offer members some financial support.

“Reducing their telecommunications’ bills is just one way we can help,” he said. “To encourage members to take up the offer we are stopping all transaction fees on any of their accounts with us. If the take up is great, the same offer will be extended to all 180,000 members in New Zealand."

Telcoinabox currently wholesales telecommunications services to 150 service providers across Australia and New Zealand, including over Telecom NZ's W-CDMA network and Telstra's DSL network.
