PayPal developer challenge backs Android apps

PayPal is backing Android as a mobile platform with the announcement that its latest developer challenge centres on Android mobile apps.

The third PayPal X developer challenge opened overnight, with developer Naveed Anwar blogging about the competiton, saying that it chose to focus on Android because of the popularity the operating system is receiving.

“The huge growth that Google’s Android platform has experienced during the past year creates a big opportunity for developers,” Anwar said in the blog entry.

“We see it every day with the submissions using our platform. That’s why we decided to put our money where our mouth is and make the theme to our next challenge Android mobile apps.”

The developer challenge is seeking entrants from across the world, with the grand prize winner receiving $25,000 and second and third prize winners receiving $15,000 and $10,000 in prize money respectively.

Anwar said that those who don’t win the prizes will also be recognised, with downloads equating to money for developers.

“Even if you don’t win one of the great prizes, you’ll still start receiving money instantly in your PayPal account as your app starts generating money for you,” he said.

“There’s no monthly waiting for a check to arrive in the mail. You get paid when you sell.”

The challenge comes as the eBay and PayPal last month announced its developer programs would merge together.
