Sprint to unveil dual-screen Android phone, report says

Produced by Kyocera, the Echo smartphone is to be launched tonight, WSJ says

Sprint plans to unveil a dual-screen Android smartphone called the Echo at a New York City event tonight, according to the Wall Street Journal citing an unnamed source.

The smartphone features two 3.5-in. touchscreens that can be configured side by side, or tucked one under the other with a pivoting hinge, according to the source. It is made by Kyocera Corp. Users would be able to drag items from one screen to the other, the source said.

Sprint would not comment on the report. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is reportedly unveiling the Echo device at tonight's event, which includes a performance by magician David Blaine.

Some analysts had expected Sprint to offer more details tonight on its version of the BlackBerry PlayBook 7-in. tablet . That device is expected to gain some interest from enterprise users because of its security features when tethered through a BlackBerry smartphone and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Earlier speculation suggested that Sprint might launch a WiMax iPhone or a Hewlet-Packard smartphone or tablet with WebOS.
