Power has been restored to hundreds more homes and businesses overnight in southeast Queensland and Energex says it will continue on Monday the restoration effort on the 17,896 still without supply.
But Energex estimates there could be between 10,000 and 12,000 homes and businesses that have suffered such severe damage that it could be some time before they're in any structural condition to be re-energised.
Since last Monday Energex crews have restored power to nearly a quarter of a million southeast Queensland homes and businesses.
More than 100 staff from New South Wales electricity suppliers Integral Energy, Energy Australia and Country Energy are due to back up Energex crews on Brisbane streets on Monday.
Energex spokesman, Mike Swanston, warned flood victims about conmen posing as electrical contractors.
"As you know, many thousands of homes will need electrical safety checks before we can restore power to them," he told the ABC.
"And the master electricians and a number of other electricians are doing electrical safety tests for customers."
The tests should cost about $200, but Swanston said he'd heard of some "vultures" charging over $500
