Dell services chief to leave company

Peter Altabef, president of Dell Services, was replaced Tuesday by the head of Dell's large enterprise business

Dell said Thursday it has replaced the head of its $US8 billion services business, which it built up in late 2009 through its acquisition of Perot Systems.

Peter Altabef, the former CEO of Perot who was made president of Dell Services after the acquisition, stepped down from that position on Tuesday, Dell said.

He was replaced by Steve Schuckenbrock, head of Dell's Large Enterprise business and the executive who ran Dell Services before Altabef took over.

Dell didn't say in its press release why Altabef was leaving and a spokeswoman declined to elaborate. "The integration of Perot is complete and it's been successful and that's what he was charged with," she said.

The services division is seen as vital to Dell. The company is trying to reduce its dependence on PC sales and earn more money from selling software and hardware in corporate data centers, where services play an important role.

Its Perot acquisition was designed to help it stay competitive with Hewlett-Packard, which bought the much bigger services firm EDS a few years earlier.

Schuckenbrock is an obvious choice to run Dell Services. Before joining the company in 2007 he was a co-chief operating officer at EDS.

Dell's Large Enterprise division will now be combined with Dell's public business, and the head of the public group, Paul Bell, is now responsible for large enterprises as well.

Altabef will stay with Dell until March 31 to help see in the new leadership, Dell said.
