Wikileaks come under denial of service (DOS) attack

The controversial Wikileaks website is promising access to almost 1500 classified United States documents relating to Australia.

However, a denial of service attack along with extremely high traffic volumes have caused the whistleblower site to slow considerably.

It remained online at 11am (AEDT) on Monday.

A hacker known as The Jester claimed responsibility for the denial of service attack.

The anonymous hacker has been known, in the past, for attacks on websites related to Jihadis and Islamo-fascists.

Several high-profile news organisations, including the New York Times and The Guardian (UK), were given priority access to 250,000 documents and published lengthy reports on Monday.

Those reports focus on US dealings with Middle East nations including Israel and Saudi Arabia.

One of the major points to come from the documents is Saudi Arabia's strong support for a US-led invasion of Iran.

While Wikileaks provided all of the leaked material to those leading news organisations, it has uploaded about 250 documents only to its website.

One of those seen by AAP offers details of what was going on at the APEC summit in Sydney in 2007.

A cable from Washington DC to the US embassy in Beijing outlines discussions between then president George W Bush and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao.

The pair had been talking about the transfer of missile parts from North Korea to Tehran, via Beijing.

"Remind Chinese officials that President Bush has been personally engaged on the issue of the transshipment of ballistic missile parts between North Korea and Iran via Beijing and that he raised this issue with President Hu at APEC," the cable says.

It went on to call for the embassy in Beijing to "seek information on the steps China has taken since the APEC discussion".
