Opera has made a beta version of its mobile browser, Opera Mini 5.1, available for mobile phones running the Symbian S60 platform.

Previously, owners of S60 handsets were restricted to using the Java version of Opera Mini. However, now the developer has launched a version of the mobile browser, which has already been released for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile handsets, that has been optimised for the Symbian platform.

As well as enjoying features such as tabbed browsing and the ability to add 'Speed Dials' or favourite websites to the browser, Symbian S60 users will also benefit from faster start-up times and improved page-load and scrolling performance.

"It is Opera's objective to provide its users with the best possible web-surfing experience on any device," said Christen Krogh, chief development officer, Opera Software.

"Porting Opera Mini to the Symbian programming language provides the largest user base in the smartphone world with the best mobile browsing experience."

Opera recently revealed the mobile browser is used by 7.12 million mobile phone owners worldwide.
