The Department of Defence has implemented an online travel booking system in conjunction with Qantas, as part of the Federal Government's push to bring services online.
The Defence Automated Travel System (DATS) will let defence personnel book Qantas domestic flights, hire cars and accommodation online, helping to reduce administrative costs for the government department. The department, which is the first to implement an online travel booking system, envisages the system will be ramped up to allow more complex bookings in the near future.
According to Jeff Whalan, deputy secretary, corporate services and infrastructure for the Department of Defence, the system will also increase flexibility for the traveller, improve the accuracy of bookings and provide a paperless administration.
Whalan also said the system, which allows users to access flight schedules up to 12 months in advance, also incorporates a simplified approval process to ensure that the 7000 or so defence personnel that travel each week do so in accordance with departmental requirements.
The DATS application is based on the ResAssist product by TRX and is hosted on the Qantas network.
