Australian users of the Motorola Milestone smartphone will receive an upgrade to Android version 2.2 “Froyo” from next year the company announced today.

The Milestone was launched by Optus in July and shipped with Android 2.1. The handset also goes by the Droid brand.

Froyo was released back in May and will be pushed to Milestone handsets in the Asia Pacific (excluding China) with an initial roll-out beginning in Q1 2011, according to Motorola.

“The upgrade allows for faster browsing and provides support for Adobe Flash Player 10, meaning improved Web browsing, and also support for USB tethering, which enables users to share their mobile data connection,” a spokesperson for Motorola said.

Froyo also 720p HD video recording, enterprise features like Exchange support, new developer APIs and the new Dalvik JIT compiler in Android 2.2 delivers between a two and five-fold performance improvement compared with Android 2.1, Google says.

The Milestone device features a sliding 3.7-inch capacitive multi-touch screen and keyboard.
