PHP and Drupal to serve up ACCC FOI

Corporate watch dog looks to open source to serve up its FOI request obligations

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) will look to a PHP and Drupal-based website to serve up documents under its Freedom of Information (FOI) obligations.

The corporate watchdog has opted to use PHP version 5.2.8 and Drupal version 6.17 to build the website, which it must launch by 1 May, 2011 as part of changes made to the FOI Act.

The website – to be developed using an agile methodology - will enable the ACCC to serve up documents required to be released to the public under FOI requests. It will also present ACCC policies, procedures and other tools.

The use of open source content management systems (CMS) like Drupal has grown in recent times with several new high profile websites including the Prime Minister's site, and ABC's three digital radio websites – Dig Music, ABC Jazz and ABC Country.

In October last year the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) also started a trek down the open source path, putting out a tender for a CMS to integrate with a planned website.

Drupal also powers organisations as diverse as Obama's administration and NASA in the US, to Greenpeace and McDonald's.
