With technology being introduced Monday, Micro Focus is offering assistance in migrating Cobol, CICS, and DB2 applications to Microsoft Windows via a managed code version of Micro Focus's mainframe and application modernization technology.
Micro Focus Server Enterprise Edition for .Net provides a development and testing environment for migrating and modernizing mainframe applications, Micro Focus said. Subsequently, developers can maintain these applications using Microsoft's Visual Studio IDE. Applications also can be moved to Microsoft environments including the Windows Azure cloud platform.

Shipping on August 16, the software leverages Windows technologies such as .Net Framework, Windows Server 2008 R2, and the SQL Server 2008 R2 database. The company on Monday would not share pricing details but did say users would achieve a 60- to 90-percent reduction in costs compared to what they would have to spend on mainframe-based systems.
"This solution will provide our customers with the greatest platform for innovation of their enterprise data and applications," said Peter Duffell, vice president of strategic partners at Micro Focus, in a statement released by the company. "The Microsoft Application Platform offers our customers unrivalled cost and performance benefits, and together Micro Focus and Microsoft have created the best solution for the migration of mission-critical mainframe applications."
