Blackberry Storm2 phones offer improved speed and touch screen capabilities

Plenty of mobile applications available to tack on

Research In Motion (RIM) has released Storm2 9950. Increased speed, touchscreen and Wi-Fi capabilities are among the improved features of this second generation release.

A/NZ managing director for RIM, Adele Beachley, said users could also choose from a broad range of free mobile applications following the recent introduction of BlackBerry App World in Australia.

The company claims Blackberry Storm2's next generation SurePress technology improves tactile feedback and multi-key actions. The clicking technology used in the previous generation will now respond to gentle typing. Multi-key functions such as shift and alt-key combinations maximise use of the virtual keyboard.

The new Blackberry OS 5 software allows users to easily set dates and times. Spin boxes (using inertial scrolling technology) and gradient shading on buttons and use of animation are other features.

The phones also have faster JavaScript and CSS processing. Users of BlackBerry Enterprise Server v5 and BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express can access to email functions such as remote file sharing and wireless syncing for contacts.

Features include:

  • Large (3.25-inch), high resolution 360x480 display at 184 ppi

  • Touch-screen with integrated functions

  • Global connectivity support: UMTS/HSPA (2100Mhz), quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM and Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) networks

  • 3.2MP camera with variable zoom, autofocus, flash and video recording

  • 256MB of Flash memory

  • 2GB of onboard memory storage and a microSD/SDHD memory card slot

  • Background noise suppression technology

  • Face detection (proximity sensor) that prevents accidental clicks and blanks the screen while the user is on the phone

  • BlackBerry Media Sync for easily syncing photos and music from iTunes and Windows MediaPlayer

  • BlackBerry Desktop Manager for PC and Mac, to enable data synching

  • Access to entertainment, productivity, IM and social networking, news and weather applications on BlackBerry App World

  • Built-in GPS for maps and other location-based applications

  • Removable, rechargeable battery with about 6 hours of talk and 280 hours of standby time
