Aussie, German scientists tackle transport in $11m deal

National ICT Australia (NICTA) has established an $11 million logistics research team in Sydney to solve endemic problems in transport.

Australian and German scientists will come together under a five-year deal between NICTA and the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering.

The NSW Government injected ‘additional funds’ into its $5 million annual contribution to NICTA to 2012.

NICTA senior researcher and University of New South Wales lecturer, Dr Mark Staples, will head up the project from the Sydney laboratory.

“The agreement…brings together an impressive suite of international engineering, science and business expertise to tackle real world problems,” Staples said in a written statement.

“We will draw especially on capabilities in embedded systems, software engineering and optimisation methods.”

Fraunhofer Gesellschaft executive director, Dieter Rombach, said Australia has “world-class capabilities” which will deliver “break-through technologies”.

The teams are drafting "etters of intent to determine which logistic problems to tackle.
