Cisco won’t rule out Asia-Pacific jobs growth

Cisco Australia has refused to say whether any of the 2000 to 3000 new jobs its global CEO John Chambers announced recently will be on offer in the region.

The news of addtional headcount came after the networking giant posted revenues of $US9.8 billion in the second quarter of its 2010 fiscal year, an 8 per cent increase from a year earlier.

Chambers said the result was a clear indication that the company is entering the second phase of the economic recovery.

Consequently, Cisco said it now plans to hire between 2000 and 3000 people over the next several quarters and has already begun that process. It will add employees across all types of jobs to pursue strategic opportunities, including entering new markets

However, a Cisco Australia spokesperson told Computerworld it is not commenting on where the jobs will appear.

“As stated in our second quarter financial earnings conference call, we would expect to add between two to three thousand people globally to Cisco in the next several quarters,” the spokesperson said.

“This growth will continue to be very targeted towards strategic opportunities, with focus on driving into new market adjacencies.” Cisco said it expects continued strong results, with revenue in the current quarter rising between 23 percent and 26 percent from a year earlier.

In July last year Cisco laid off around 2000 staff worldwide as part of efforts to trim costs to combat the economic downturn.
