Macquarie Telecom invests $1m in private cloud

Will recoup quarter of million dollars over three years through new storage and automation tools

Macquarie Telecom is ramping up its private cloud hosting services with a $1m investment in new EMC storage and automation tools in its 'Intellicentre' hosting facility.

The company has deployed EMC Clariion networked storage and EMC Ionix IT management software to automate management of its virtual and physical infrastructure.

According to Aidan Tudehope, managing director, hosting, at Macquarie Telecom, the upgrade will save Macquarie more than $260,000 over the next three years through the reduction of operational costs.

The new upgrade will also help the company improve its customer service levels, another important factor as it increasingly seeks to host more digital media content, mission critical web applications and e-commerce websites in its cloud services offering, Tudehope said.

According to the company, its data centre storage requirements are growing exponentially at a rate of more than 30 per cent per annum.

Macquarie had also migrated 40 per cent of Macquarie Telecom’s existing customer base to dedicated virtualised environments. About 95 per cent of new customers’ requirements were now being based on virtualised environments.

In January Macquarie threw its hat into the ring to help the NSW government consolidate 130 facilities down to two.

In October last year it helped urge federal politicians to pass legislative reforms that would lead to a break up of Telstra business.
