Google to stream IPL cricket on YouTube

Google has announced a deal with the Indian Premier League (IPL) to offer live cricket on YouTube and on-demand access to the tournament's 60 matches.

The offer, available from March 12, will mark the first time a major sporting event has been streamed live on YouTube.

The matches will be available worldwide through the IPL YouTube channel, excluding USA which offers catch-up matches.

The IPL channel will also offer special on-demand content including match highlights, player interviews, wickets of the match, top sixes, pitch reports and more.

"We're extremely excited to bring IPL cricket fever to millions of Aussies via YouTube,” the Head of Business Development of Google Australia, Ryan Hall, said.

“We want YouTube to be a comprehensive destination for online video and that now includes live sport.”

Google, which owns YouTube, will have exclusive access to web and mobile rights for IPL content for two years, including seasons three and four.

The partners will jointly share revenues from sponsorships and advertising on the IPL YouTube channel and the official website of IPL.

IPL will join global companies such as Disney, Turner and Univision as well as Australian media companies like ABC and Cricket Australia who already use YouTube as a platform to find their target audience and to generate revenue for their content.
