Defence to ditch dated PABX

The Department of Defence is set to decommission a 24-year-old PABX that services its administrative offices in Canberra.

The department is looking to deploy a replacement for a single NEC 2400 PABX – which provides 6645 working extensions across eight buildings - located in the Russell Offices as it has reached "the end of its useful and economic life".

The NEC PABX has used copper infrastructure for intra-building voice connectivity with existing support provided by Telstra.

For the replacement solution, Defence has opened up a Request for Tender process seeking a provider to supply: Hardware and software; the provision of system implementation, installation and other services; and ongoing maintenance support among other things.

Tender documents state the department will consider migrating to a VoIP solution, but stressed no access would be given to the Defence Data Networks.

Additionally, the solution is expected to be able to scale up by 20 per cent over the coming two years. The tender closes February 5, 2010.
