Abbott appoints Tony Smith as new shadow comms minister

Nick Minchin to move to shadow minister for resources and energy

Federal Opposition leader Tony Abbott has named Tony Smith as the new shadow minister for broadband, communications and the digital economy.

The announcement follows a reshuffle of the Opposition’s front bench which has also seen former shadow communications minister Nick Minchin to the position of shadow minister for resources and energy.

“I believe that Tony’s considerable financial skills will increase scrutiny on the government’s $43 billion broadband network which is being foisted on Australian taxpayers without even a business plan,” Abbott said in a statement of Smith’s appointment to the new role.

Commenting on the work of Nick Minchin to date, Abbott said he had successfully brought significant scrutiny to the Rudd Government’s $43 billion dollar “‘no business plan’ national broadband network.”

“As a former cabinet minister for industry, science and resources, Nick brings extensive industry understanding to the [resources and energy] role as well as considerable financial expertise as a former Finance Minister,” he said.
