Dynamic media consortium The Khronos Group has announced the addition of new contributing members to its ranks. The consortium is hoping that as its membership continues to grow awareness will build for its efforts to promote the OpenGL ES and OpenML digital media standards.
Already comprised of heavy-hitters including ATI Technologies Inc., Evans Data Corp. and Sutherland, Silicon Graphics Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc., The Khronos Group has been expanded to include new contributing members like Nvidia Corp., Texas Instruments Inc., Vicarious Visions Inc. and others.
OpenGL ES is a proposed standard for advanced embedded graphics. It builds on technology already in the existing OpenGL standard -- used widely in computer graphics and adopted by Apple Computer Inc., as well. OpenGL ES proposes to define a subset of the existing API "that will enable the lightest weight interface between software and hardware."
OpenML, meanwhile, is a cross-platform standard programming environment intended for media content creation and playback. The standard offers methodologies for capturing, transporting, displaying and synchronizing digital media, including 2D and 3D graphics, audio, video, as well as i/o and networking.
More details about The Khronos Group, OpenGL ES and OpenML are available from the Web site.
