ANZ has picked Anne Weatherston to take on the CIO role left vacant by Peter Dalton.

The new CIO will report directly to CEO, Mike Smith and joins ANZ from the Bank of Ireland.

In a statement, Smith said Weatherston's appointment highlighted the bank's focus on simplifying its technology architecture and delivering a global IT platform.

"It's also a shared reflection of the scale and pace of change David [Cartwright, head of the bank's operations and shared services functions] is leading in operations and shared services in support of ANZ's super regional bank aspirations," he said.

Weatherston will start her role in early 2010.

The appointment means ANZ's core support division, operations, technology and shared services will be split into two divisions.
