Fujitsu has unveiled a 10Gbps Ethernet switch designed to handle important applications in an energy-efficient way.

The XG2600 switch is a 26-port Layer 2 device that supports SFP+ optical modules and is designed for use with SFP+ twinax copper cables .The 1RU offering is the first Fujitsu Ethernet switch to support SFP+ connectors, which help the switch consume only five watts of power per port, Fujitsu says.

Fujitsu has been offering Ethernet switches since 2005. In addition to the 26-port XG2600, it also offers 12- and 20-port 10G Ethernet switches.

The XG2600 is designed for low latency applications, such as storage, digital video, university research, Web hosting and content delivery networks. Latency on the switch is 300 nanoseconds, the company says.

The XG2600 also includes field-reversible cooling fans to reduce the overall cost of cooling.

The Fujitsu switch will go up against other small form factor, low latency 10G Ethernet switches from Cisco, Arista, BLADE Network Technologies, Extreme Networks, Brocade, Force10, HP ProCurve and other vendors.

The XG2600 costs $US18,000, or just less than $US700 per port.
