As the NBN construction chugs along in Tasmania, debate on the mainland continues as to whether laying the fibre optic cables underground is more advantageous than putting them in existing overhead infrastructure. Many industry experts have weighed in on the debate, what are your thoughts?

Underground cables have a longer life, but have an obvious increase in cost, so its down to short term, long term view.
I favour the underground approach, for extended cable life, and less of an eye sore.

In my view underground clearly wins out:
Less maintenance problems
Less impacted by weather (lightning)
Less impact on the environment
Greater capacity in ducts (if not directly in ground)

Save your breath ! This has got absolutely nothing to do with logic or (un)common sense, and everything, to do with rolling out the NBN at the cheapest possible cost. I can hardly wait to hear the bleatings and finger wagging of our illustrious politicians, complaining about the absolutely intolerable levels of their shiny new NBN's downtime, after they have forced its implementation via overhead power poles. IDIOTS.....!!!

Why do I keep getting minds-eye vision flashes of our NBN's cabling future, as the exact equivalent of what we can see today, in movies of the 3rd world's streets, with their 'spagetti-tangled' overhead cable distribution schemes..........???

Underground of course.
They
Underground of course.
They would look messy overhead, plus they'd be easier to sabotage if they were out in the open, installing them underground prevents that, or slows it down at least.
