SYDNEY, Australia, March 23, 2005 -- StorageTek is causing quite a stir in the market. Customers are lining up to have a StreamLineTM SL8500 in their data centres. And, StorageTek is enhancing the functionality and power of its premier enterprise modular tape library system with expanded tape drive support, complementary software offerings and standards adoption.

Storage Technology Corporation, (NYSE:STK), the leading provider of enterprise information lifecycle management, announced that the SL8500, which was made generally available last June, is enjoying widespread customer adoption. Customers are using the enterprise tape library to archive and protect their business critical information.

In addition to customer traction, StorageTek is adding more functionality and robust offerings around the SL8500 including:

EXPANDED TAPE DRIVE SUPPORT: StorageTek continues its rigorous qualification of the third-generation Linear Tape-OpenTM (LTO®) Ultrium (LTO-3) and SDLT 600 tape drive formats and plans to provide library support for these drives later this spring. With this expanded tape drive support, customers will be assured an even wider variety of tape drive options to meet their unique needs. The SL8500 currently supports StorageTek's enterprise T-Series tape drives as well as LTO Gen 2 midrange drives from HP and IBM.

VIRTUAL STORAGE MANAGER (VSM) AND SL8500 SUPPORT: Mainframe customers have attached VSM capabilities to maximise tape cartridge capacity, resulting in more efficient use of tape drives, increased productivity, and lower management cost. StorageTek is now offering SL8500 customers an upgraded version of VSM that provides near continuous operations that enable customers to change tape drives dynamically without interruption of service.

HOST SOFTWARE COMPONENT (HSC) AND ACSLS LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE SUPPORT/NCO: StorageTek recently unveiled its Host Software Component (HSC) version 6.1 and ACSLS version 7.1 library management software, designed to enable the management of StorageTek's automated tape libraries in MVS and Open Systems environments. Working with this enhanced software, StorageTek's SL8500 assures Near Continuous Operations (NCO) support so that customers can dynamically and non-disruptively add or remove library panels, tape drives, passthru ports, and libraries. These enhancements result in greater levels of availability, ease of use, and manageability.

COMMON INFORMATION MODEL (CIM) SUPPORT: Underscoring the company's commitment to open storage management standards, StorageTek recently announced its statement of direction to support the CIM and Storage Management Information (SMI) specification for Storage Area Network (SAN)-based storage management. CIM has been endorsed by the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA) as the technology that will enable simplified multi-vendor management of storage networks. As an active participant in SNIA's CIM Storage Media Library (SML) technical working group for tape library storage, StorageTek has been a contributor to the standards that will provide industry wide benefits to large and small businesses. Initial availability of the StorageTek CIM Provider for libraries and ACSLS software environments is expected by mid-2005.
