Five enterprise open source wiki apps to watch

Collaborative editing of Web documents has brought a new dimension to enterprise knowledge management. The architecture that made Wikipedia famous can now be applied to internal processes. And because of their long association with open source projects many of the most popular wikis are themselves open source. Here are five open source enterprise wikis to keep an eye on.
1. MindTouch
MindTouch (formerly deki wiki) is an enterprise wiki and collaborative portal which allows access to Web-service extensions, PHP plug-ins, user and group permissions, and SSL encryption. Support and many of the advanced features are only available in the commercial versions.
URL: www.mindtouch.com
Licence: GPL
2. Mediawiki
MediaWiki is the wiki application made famous for running Wikipedia. It's designed to be run on a large server farm for a Web site that gets millions of hits per day. MediaWiki supports versioning of pages and can manage image and multimedia files. For large wikis with lots of users, MediaWiki supports caching and can be easily coupled with Squid proxy server software. MediWiki supports skins and plug-ins for extensibility. The application is developed in PHP and supports MySQL and PostgreSQL.

Licence: GPL
3. TWiki
TWiki is a wiki application that calls itself “the open source enterprise wiki and Web 2.0 application platform”. According to the project, users without programming skills can create Web applications using TWiki to manage both structured and unstructured information. There is an extensive list of applications and plug-ins available for TWiki, which itself is developed in Perl.

Licence: GPL
4. XWiki
If your application platform is Java then XWiki is worth a look. Like TWiki, XWiki considers itself a “second-generation” wiki which can be used to create collaborative Web applications in addition to content. Other features include an office importer to turn office documents (Microsoft, OpenOffice.org, PDF) into wiki pages, as well as a document lifecycle manager. XWiki has a set of bundled applications that can also be used to extend its functionality.

Licence: LGPL
5. ScrewTurn Wiki
If your application platform is .Net you can try ScrewTurn Wiki, an ASP.NET wiki engine. ScrewTurn Wiki does not require a database nor any modifications to IIS to run. Its developers claim high performance and scalability thanks to a “smart” content caching system and small footprint. Other features include automatic page backups, page-level authorisation and plug-in support.

Regarding TWiki: In Oct 2008 most of the core developers (98%) left the project and created the Foswiki fork due to trademark issues.
The open source project TWiki is almost dead since then. See https://www.ohloh.net/p/compare?metric=Contributors&project_0=TWiki&project_1=Foswiki

Your survey is incomplete without including foswiki -- free open source wiki -- which was originally based on TWiki, but has a robust community supporting it. The power of open source and collaboration makes foswiki the best choice.

Indeed Foswiki succeeds TWiki, so ignoring Foswiki hides the reality of a forced fork around a year ago. There is full compatibility between both wikis and a lot of active development happening in Foswiki done by an vivid community. You may also want to have a look at: http://www.ohloh.net/p/compare?metric=Contributors&project_0=TWiki&project_1=Foswiki

Hm. Now I am the third to complain about including TWiki and not the succeeding true Open Source platform Foswiki. I thought a long time, if another comment is necessary.
But maybe you allow, that I add two essential links:
- The download page of TWiki, with 13 advertising links to TWiki.net and a optional form covering the download link:
http://twiki.org/cgi-bin/view/Codev/DownloadTWiki
- The download page of the Foswiki community without any external links to commercial entities:
http://www.foswiki.org/Download/WebHome
This is exactly why this fork happens and why hardly nobody apart from TWiki.net is left at TWiki.org to complain.
Thanks for listening / reading. Martin Seibert

I second my previous speakers. You really should take a look at www.foswiki.org, the much improved fork of TWiki.

Foswiki's Wikipedia article was deleted 6 times. The Wikipedian community found that Foswiki lacks notability.
Also, the project isn't even a year old, and their last stable release was version 1.0.7. The project isn't mature enough yet.
Unlike other wiki software like MindTouch or MediaWiki, Foswiki never had any official awards or acknowledgements.

While I don't do enterprise development, I've also found Foswiki to be a very flexible and robust system that serves as the foundation for a suite of DNA analysis software & databases. Having migrated from TWiki, any noticed differences have been in favor of Foswiki.

Don't forget that there are other open source offerings that have done a good job in this area. Kablink Teaming not only has wiki functionality but also blogs, forums, and shared file folders.

Clearly marketing FUD from the TWiki corporate. Foswiki "1.0.7" is essentially TWiki 4.4, so it has ten years of development behind it, and it also has the previous two
release managers (four years of TWiki mindshare) and essentially all of the developers. Since its the same codebase and developers, every award given to TWiki applies. As can easily be seen by the Ohloh metrics, the developers have chosen. That some users are not yet aware of the forced renaming development does not materially diminish the achievement of the Foswiki team in their ten years of effort -- it's just that much of that time their contribution was under another flag, and it was not their choice to have to change it. This is always the danger of a "community" with a self-appointed dictator who owns legal rights (in this case, the trademark) and chooses at a certain point to profit from it.

Question authority, think for yourself.
Most, if not all, core developers + others left TWiki.org and joined foswiki...So foswiki is mature, and for sure wiser. Then, what is TWiki now that all those good guys left....Please be open minded and think for yourself.
One very important point is that Foswiki 1.x actually is the continued TWiki 4.x... The project is young in name but the participants have many years of twiki.org and community experience. I believe Foswiki has about the same companies and consultants to develop and support it as twiki.org used to have. Except the *not* evil twiki.net corp, of course. Foswiki is a *love story* but it takes some more drama before the happy part comes.

Foswiki continues what TWiki achieved. Those core developers that made TWiki a success are all at Foswiki now. Problem is that this fork came with a rebrand as well that does not transport acknowledgements addressed to TWiki over to Foswiki. Note however, that the achievements of 10 years of community work also don't carry over to TWiki.net, the VC company that took over this open source project a year ago. If those official awards and acknowledgement don't carry over to Foswiki, then for sure all of TWiki's success can't be pocketed by TWiki.net, which however it does for its own commercial benefit.

When I asked her what she was doing she said http://www.fnlife.com - "I'm pretending to be mommy from last night." I was on a business trip last night.
