ShoreTel, Skype connect for SIP integration

Unified communications vendor ShoreTel has announced interoperability with the beta version of Skype for session initiation protocol (SIP), enabling voice calls via Skype with a ShoreTel UC system. Skype users can now contact ShoreTel telephone systems for free via a Web-based click-to-call service.
Skype announced Skype for SIP in March this year and encouraged IP-PABX vendors to integrate with the service.
Skype for Business general manager, Stefan Oberg, said Skype for SIP is easy for businesses to configure and manage using the Web-based control panel, making it complementary to ShoreTel’s UC system.
Skype for SIP now allows ShoreTel’s business customers and their employees to receive inbound calls through their ShoreTel SIP-enabled unified communications system from registered Skype users (some 400 million) at no cost to the Skype user.
Conversely, ShoreTel users can reduce costs by directing outbound calls from devices connected to the IP-PABX via Skype for SIP to landlines and mobile devices at Skype rates.
ShoreTel CEO, John W. Combs, said the move is part of the company’s commitment to a “standards-based open ecosystem”.
“The simple-to-configure capabilities of Skype for SIP will further improve the flexibility and efficiency of our customers’ operations,” he said.
