Finnish phone giant Nokia has announced its e-mail service Ovi Mail has hit the one million accounts in the space of just over six months.
"More than just reaching a company milestone, this proves to us that there is a real appetite in the developing world for these types of tailored services," said Tom Furlong, head of consumer messaging at Nokia. "For first-time e-mail users, Ovi Mail provides a digital identity and we are thrilled by its rapidly rising adoption rate."
Targeting subscribers who might not have access to a PC in the developing countries, engineers specifically designed the service so that an e-mail account can be set up and managed in a Nokia device.
The top five countries for Ovi Mail subscribers are India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia and South Africa. Since its inception in December 2008, Ovi Mail has been available in more than 180 countries and supports 20 languages.
