Australian telco 3 has almost sold out of Apple's iPhone 3GS online on the day of launch.
The iPhone 3GS was launched today through 3 stores and online at 3's Web site, but 3 has confirmed the current demand for the smartphone is causing "some stock shortages".
Both the 16GB and 32GB models of the iPhone are already marked as "out of stock" on 3's online store, while the company has confirmed that stock is strictly limited in 3 stores and dealers.
A 3 spokesperson said that 3 expects current stocks of the iPhone 3GS to be sold out over the weekend, although stock of the iPhone 3G 8GB model — offered for free on a $49 cap over 24 months — is still available. 3 hasn't stated when the iPhone 3GS will be back in stock.
3 has set up a pre-registration portal for customers interested in purchasing an iPhone 3GS. 3 will contact consumers via email or SMS when stocks are available.
The stock shortage comes on the back of yesterday's announcement that 3 was dropping its monthly repayment prices on almost all iPhone plans.
