Stonehenge to appear on Google Street View

Stonehenge has been revealed as the first UK tourist attraction that will be photographed for Google's Street View.

Google Street View is an add-on to Google Maps and Google Earth that allows users to see street-level photographs of a number of cities.

The images are captured by specially adapted Google Street View cars that travel the UK taking photographs. However, these cars are unsuitable for use in rural and off-road areas, meaning images of UK tourist attractions are not available on the service.

In May this year, the search engine unveiled a trike that can navigate rural areas and capture photographs. Google also asked web users to vote for the tourist attractions they'd most like to see appear on the Street View service.

Stonehenge topped the poll, closely followed by the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, the Angel of the North, Loch Ness, the Eden Project and Warwick Castle - all of which will be photographed and made available on Street View.

Google revealed that Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland will also be photographed.
