Aussies shun cloud computing this year: Gartner

Cloud computing may be sweeping the world but Australians have shunned the technology, according to research firm Gartner.

Speaking at the Infrastructure Operations and Data Centre Summit keynote in Sydney today, Gartner analysts Matthew Boon and Simon Haywood said "Aussie pragmatism" is behind the boycott.

About a quarter of Australian organisations show little interest in cloud computing. This compares to around 10 per cent of overseas companies.

Haywood, a US-based director for Gartner's service provider research group, said Australians will stay their ground this year on cloud computing.

"Aussies have a grasp on cloud computing but they also have a wait-and-see attitude," Haywood said.

"The 'cloud' name gives a sense that anything will apply to it... it can be considered a large amorphous concept, but to an Aussie, that's not useful."

Despite the marketing hype, Haywood said local organisations should research how the service model can help the business internally and with customers."No consumer cares how the services are delivered [and] users are less and less concerned," he said.

Local cloud model deployments are typically left to the larger organisations like the Bank of Queensland which can rapidly push-out its applications internally as part of its branch expansion.

Matthew Boon said about half of local organisations will focus IT spend on improving existing assets and virtualisation.

"About 50 percent of businesses said they will increase investment in virtualisation, on top of an already high investment," Boon said.

"Cloud is nothing more than a further step... a continuation of trends," he said.
