Telstra condemns ACCC court action

Telstra has defended itself from claims of anti-competitive behaviour, deeming the ACCC’s court action as “unnecessary”.

In a statement, Telstra group public policy and communications director, David Quilty, claimed the proceedings initiated by the independent government authority was a complete waste of taxpayer money claiming the “capped” exchange issue was fixed a year ago.

Quilty also accused the ACCC of attempting to gain more control in the telecommunications industry and that the court action over a minor issue demonstrates a fault in the way the authority is administered.

Competitive Carriers Coalition (CCC) executive director, David Forman, refuted Telstra’s accusations.

“It is completely disingenuous for Telstra to pretend this is some isolated example,” Forman said. “This demonstrates Telstra’s reflex reaction in these kinds of situations is to claim there is some kind of crazed conspiracy against them.”

Forman defended the ACCC’s credibility, stating that the authority has been reluctant to act against Telstra in the past.

“Our complaints have been the opposite of what Telstra is saying,” Forman said. “We think that the ACCC has been so hesitant to take Telstra on for so many years, there have been many cases where they have no acted.”

In regards to Telstra’s claim that they have already rectified the “capped exchange” issue, Forman said that CCC members are still experiencing the problem.
