ASUS's Eee PC 1000HE ships with the older Windows XP, not Linux
ASUS's latest netbook model, the Eee PC 1000HE, is now available in Australia with updated specs, including 9 and a half hours of battery life, and a price tag of $899.
The operating system preloaded on the 1000HE will be a genuine copy of Windows XP (first released in 2001) and not Windows Vista, let alone Linux which helped make the Eee PC famous during its debut in 2007.
The 1000HE will initially ship with Intel's Atom N270 processor, but releases will be available with the N280 chip “soon”, according to ASUS.
With specs pushing that of a regular notebook, the 1000HE has a 160GB hard disk, a 10-inch LED screen running at 1024 by 600 resolution, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a keyboard 92 per cent the size of a “regular” desktop keyboard.
Unlike its predecessors, the 1000HE will be a “heavy” 1.45kg, well above the 1kg de facto standard for netbooks.
For connectivity, 802.11N and Bluetooth are built in along with the standard Ethernet port and card reader.
Multimedia also gets a boost with built-in “digital array” microphone and 1.3 megapixel Web cam.
People wanting to use Linux on an Eee PC can look at Easy Peasy, an Ubuntu derivative tailored for Eee netbooks.

Price is Australia is TOO Expensive
RRP in the USA is USD399. Get it in Amazon.com at $374 + USD 30 freight to Australia. I do not know about Int'l guarantees, but the price differential is HUGE. 27% even if you can claim the GST.

We Australians are getting ripped off!
I have not been able to find the NEW version of the 100HE in Australian stores anywhere. The new 1000HE has the N280 1.66GHz processor, 9.5hr battery and a faster FSB speed. Retailers such as Harvey Norman, Good Guys, and JB HI-FI all sell the OLD N270 version for around $900AUD!
We are getting SERIOUSLY RIPPED OFF here in Aus!
I will be importing my 1000HE from the US for a total of about $530AUD delivered...
