Telecom NZ announces roll-out of new 3G network

The company plans to extend 3G services to 97 percent of the population, and will invest over $440 million to do so.

Telecom New Zealand [ASX: TEL] yesterday announced the roll-out of a new NZ 3G network, to be complete by June 2009.

The network will extend 3G services to 97 percent of the NZ population.

Telecom will spend more than NZ$500 million [AUD$441.1 million] on the network roll-out, which will utilise W-CDMA [Widespread Code-Division Multiple Access] technology using a frequency of 850MHz.

Telecom will also begin deploying HSPA+ [Evolved High Speed Packet Access] technology in a bid to future-proof the new network.

All told, Telecom NZ will be investing NZ$2.4 billion [AUD$2.1 billion] in infrastructure investment over the next two years.
