Seagate plans new PC, server tape drives

Seagate Technology will introduce new internal tape drives for PC and workstation users or entry-level server operators to back up their systems, the Californian company announced here at the CeBIT trade show on Thursday.

The new Hornet 40 ATAPI (Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface) and TapeStor Travan 40 drives are slated for worldwide shipment in late March. Both are designed to allow users to make a "snapshot" of their system, including shortcuts, custom settings, installed software, and data. An external Hornet 40 model, with USB (Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 connectivity, will be available "in the coming months", Seagate said.

The new drives can hold up to 20GB of data per cartridge, or 40GB compressed. They have a transfer rate of 2Mbps and are compatible with the previous generation of Seagate drives, said Brad Renfree, director of the LTO (Linear Tape-Open) technology product line.

Among the new features are a technique that makes backup time more efficient by throttling the drive speed up and down to match the computer's system resources; a more durable steel chassis; and a thermal monitor that can signal the drive to slow down if temperatures rise above a certain level.

The suggested US retail price for the Hornet 40 is $US369; the TapeStor Traven 40 costs $399..
