BT Cellnet Ltd., the U.K. arm of mobile phone operator mm02 PLC, has picked IBM Corp. to design, build and manage the computer systems needed for 3G (third-generation) mobile services, IBM and BT Cellnet said Thursday.
IBM's hardware will enable BT Cellnet customers to wirelessly transmit images, video and other large files through the next generation mobile network, IBM and BT Cellnet said.
The 10-year deal is worth up to £50 million (US$72 million) in its first year. In the first phase, IBM will integrate BT Cellnet's existing systems, which includes the systems of mm02's mobile Internet business Genie, according to IBM of Armonk, New York, and BT Cellnet of London.
