Commander dodges ombudsman axe

Commander Communications has been cleared by the Workplace Ombudsman for sacking almost a third of its staff.

The ombudsman launched an investigation to determine if the company met requirements of employee contracts when it axed 600 jobs from its troubled IT hardware and support arm.

CEO Amanda Lacaze said the cuts would lift shareholder value.

"We are very pleased the Workplace Ombudsman has confirmed that this commitment was reflected in our fair dealings with former employees," Lacaze said.

Commander paid some $17 million in redundancies and saved about $65 million in reduced annual costs.

Commander suffered its fourth profit fall in nine months at the time of the January cuts, in which its beleaguered hardware reselling arm contributed to half of a $1 billion revenue with zero profit.
