Market research firm DisplaySearch Inc. today published its 2002 LCD Monitor Strategy Report. The company said that it expects LCD monitors to overtake CRTs on a revenue basis in 2004, outselling them by 5 to 1 by 2006.
DisplaySearch said that LCD monitor sales would reach 113 million units by 2006, growing to occupy 82 percent of the market. Conversely, CRT display sales are expected to drop to a 16 percent share in the same time, to about 22 million units.
Driving this growth, said the company, are lower prices derived from nearly US$40 billion in TFT LCD capital spending from 2000 to 2005. That will ultimately result in a nearly 400 percent increase in manufacturing capacity during that same time period. Also driving down prices is the development of fifth generation fabrication systems, which are designed to produce larger panels -- like those used in Apple's displays, for example -- at lower costs.
DisplaySearch projects that the average panel price per diagonal inch will drop nearly 40 percent by 2006, with prices on 19-inch displays expected to drop the fastest.
Unless you're actually in the display industry, you probably won't get a chance to view the more than 900 page report, however. It's priced between US$4,895 - $5,395. But if the price doesn't scare you off, you can get a 10 percent discount for the next month.
