Australians have gone Facebook crazy. In the past year the number of user accounts on the social networking site has increased by over 1000 per cent to 2.6 million users.

According to Mike Murphy, vice president of media sales at Facebook, Australia has become the fifth biggest Facebook country.

"Australians love Facebook," Murphy said.

In February 2007, there were 220,000 active user accounts. Today that stands at 2.6 million. That is a 1081.8 percentage increase.

Worldwide, there are 67 million active Facebook users. The top countries ahead of Australia are the US, UK, Canada and in fourth spot, Turkey. France lies in sixth position behind Australia, followed by Columbia, Sweden, China and Norway, which round out the top 10.

Across the Ditch, New Zealand has 370,000 users, according to Murphy.

Speaking at the Ad:tech conference in Sydney, Murphy also debugged the myth that social networking sites are for teenagers. He said a large portion of Facebook's users are in their 20s and 30s.

Youths may have jumped into social networking first, but adults are learning fast. "It's definitely not just a phenomenon for kids," he said.
