LINUXWORLD: IBM, SuSE expand Linux cooperation

IBM and German software vendor SuSE Linux AG are expanding their cooperation on the open-source Linux OS (operating system), SuSE said in a statement released in conjunction with the LinuxWorld conference currently under way in New York.

The two companies will work together on developing the "SuSE Linux Enterprise Server" OS for IBM's eServer series, building on a cooperation that has been in place for more than two years, SuSE said. The German company's OS software for enterprise servers is available for IBM's iSeries, pSeries, xSeries, and zSeries machines.

IBM cooperates with several Linux distributors besides SuSE, including Caldera Systems Inc., Red Hat Inc., Turbolinux Inc., and various regional vendors, said a spokeswoman for the technology giant, who asked not to be named.

Big Blue has made no secret of its enthusiasm about Linux, especially in the server market, and last year said it was allocating about US$1 billion to developing support services and technology that would work with the OS. In a keynote speech at the conference Wednesday, IBM Senior Vice President William Zeitler of the company's server group lauded the open-source movement, saying it spells the end of proprietary systems' domination of the IT market.
