TIPPINGPOINT PROTECTS CUSTOMERS’ NETWORKS FROM ZOTOB WORM

Digital Vaccine® Service Protects Latest Microsoft Vulnerability

Sydney, AUSTRALIA – 17 August, 2005 – TippingPoint, a division of 3Com (Nasdaq: COMS) and the leader in intrusion prevention, today announced that TippingPointTM Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is again providing preemptive protection from the recently defined Zotob worm. Through its TippingPoint Digital Vaccine® service, distributed to customers on the same day Microsoft announced its vulnerability, the company had protection from the Zotob worm exploit.

The Zotob worm exploits the Plug and Play buffer overflow vulnerability as described in the Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS05-039) on 9 August, 2005. The worm opens a backdoor on the compromised system as well as starts an FTP server. The worm also disrupts the regular anti-virus update downloads to the infected system. The latest worm variant has the added capability of sending spam and infected emails.

TippingPoint protection of this vulnerability was in place for all its customers just a few hours after the issuance of the Microsoft Security Bulletin. Thus, its customers were protected prior to an exploit being developed, blocking the worm from disrupting the organisations and damaging networks and systems.

“With exploits and worms emerging within days of a Microsoft Bulletin release, the patch window is now almost non-existent for network administrators,” said Rohit Dhamankar, manager of TippingPoint’s Digital Vaccine security research team. “Fast evolving worms like Zotob can be extremely damaging once they infect any single system in a Windows network environment. TippingPoint IPS, with its total packet inspection, is one of the only solutions capable of combating the ever-increasing security threats our customers face.”

The TippingPoint Intrusion Prevention Systems provide Application Protection, Performance Protection and Infrastructure Protection at gigabit speeds through total packet inspection. Application Protection capabilities provide fast, accurate, reliable protection from internal and external cyber attacks. Through its Infrastructure Protection capabilities, the TippingPoint IPS protects VoIP infrastructure, routers, switches, DNS and other critical infrastructure from targeted attacks and traffic anomalies. TippingPoint’s Performance Protection capabilities enable customers to throttle non-mission critical applications that hijack valuable bandwidth and IT resources, thereby aligning network resources and business-critical application performance.

The business justification for data security

In the information security world we face two major types of threats: "noisy" threats which directly interfere with our ability to do business and "quiet" threats which cause real damage, but don't necessarily prevent people from doing their jobs. Read on to discover how to combat both types of threats and to justify the use of data security within your business.
