Linux Networx makes some high-flying friends

Linux Networx, a high performance computing and clustering concern, recently delivered a pair of powerful Linux clustering products to two customers with eyes toward the skies - NASA's Center for Computational Sciences at the Goddard Space Flight Center, and ATK Launch Systems, a maker of weapons and space systems for the U.S. government.

For NASA, Linux Networx is delivering a 128-node Linux cluster, capable of performing 3.3 trillion floating-point operations per second (or, TFLOPS), attached to a 60TB storage system from IBM. Duties of this supercomputer will include performing complex weather and climate modeling and forecasting, as well as simulating astrophysical phenomena, according to NASA. The cluster will join several other clustered parallel computing systems at Goddard, with a total capacity of over 40 TFLOPS.

For Brigham City, Utah-based ATK Launch Systems - a $900 million aerospace corporation - Linux Networx is building a 110-node cluster, with 2.24 TFLOPS of processing power and 6TB of attached storage. A visualization subsystem from Linux Networx is also included in the package, which the company will use to display large-scale analysis models produced by the cluster. Such analysis models include aerodynamics simulations and evaluations of structural components in launch equipment and solid-propulsion rockets. The cluster will also be made available to business applications inside the company, according to Linux Networx.
